Our research team has recently published a new scientific article in the journal Urban Science, titled “Public Acceptance of Smart and Green Mobility Hubs in Attica, Greece.” Co-authored by Panagiotis Papantoniou, Dimosthenis Pavlou, Vasiliki Amprasi, and Maria Sinou, the study explores public perceptions of smart and sustainable mobility hubs in the Attica region. The findings contribute to the design and implementation of green urban mobility solutions in Greek cities.
Mobility hubs act as central points where shared and active mobility options connect seamlessly with the existing public transport system. Despite the availability of an extensive transit network in the Attica region, the reliance on private cars remains particularly high — underlining the urgent need to promote alternative, more sustainable modes of transport.
This study investigates the public acceptance of smart and green mobility hubs, a key factor for encouraging a shift from private vehicle use to public transport. To explore this, a stated preference survey was conducted with 152 respondents at two transport nodes — Voula (tram) and Irakleio (metro) — representing different mobility contexts.
Findings revealed a generally positive public attitude towards the development of such hubs. Interestingly, commuter preferences varied between the two locations, with features such as green areas and smart charging benches standing out as highly desirable.
The results highlight the potential of well-designed mobility hubs to enhance the attractiveness of public and shared transport, promote sustainability, and improve urban livability. The proposed interventions are expected to significantly contribute to sustainable urban mobility in both the target areas and the wider metropolitan region, while also helping reduce environmental impacts.
